Highlights - Museums

Matschgerer Museum - Absam

On display here are about 200 wooden masks (the oldest about 200 years old), Matschgerer costumes, photos, old knapsacks, pictures and lots of background on Shrovetide customs. 

Special tours for groups.
Museum closed July and August.
 
Municipal Museum - Absam

Part of this museum is dedicated to violin-maker, Jakob Stainer One special exhibit is a violin made by the "father of the German fiddle" himself.
Mining Museum
The Mining Museum provides an insight into the history of salt extraction. It consists of a re-creation of the Hall valley mine, which was abandoned in 1967. 

Galleries, shafts, tools, minerals, a shute and much more vividly convey to the visitor what it was really like to go underground. The Mining Museum is in the centre of Hall's Old Town (duration of guided tour approx. 30 mins).

Burg Hasegg Mint Tower - Coin Museum - Hall

Make the breathtaking ascent of the Mint Tower in Burg Hasegg. The tower, fully renovated in 2005, boasts:

* Direct access from Hall Mint Museum
* 200-step climb to the top of the tower
* Stunning views over the Inn valley and the Karwendel mountains
* Guided tours with audioguides or by staff
* Three tower stations with interactive information points
* Option of ascent of tower combined with visit to Hall Mint

Typewriter Museum - Wattens
Over 450 fully-functioning typewriters from the Jörg Thien collection showcased in a modern style.

They date from 1884 to the present day, and provide a fascinating insight into the development of the typewriter. Cutaway models reveal how they worked.

The museum is suitable for wheelchair users.
Admission to the musuem is free.
 

Opening times: Thursday 14.00 - 19.00, closed Sunday and public holidays. Guided tours outside opening times available at all times on request.

Local History and Industry Museum - Wattens
The past and present showcased in an interesting way.
The Wattens Local History and Industry Museum provides an interesting and attractive insight into how Wattens and Volders has evolved over the years and what it is like now. The wealth of finds at the Himmelreich hill fort and the urnfield at Volders are also on view here, as are a vast array of artefacts and pictures that document the town's history and the development of the two major industrial concerns, Swarovski and Wattenspapier.

Regular guided tours take place from 20th June until 19th September, 2008, on Fridays 17.00 to 18.00.
